What exactly are essential oils?

Essential oils are highly fragrant concentrated plant extracts which have multiple uses. There are multiple ways of extraction, resulting in a heavily potent oil. Essential oils should always be handled with care and diluted prior to any skin application. 

 

Uses for essential oils

Every essential oil has a versatile of benefits and uses. Generally speaking, essential oils can be used in home based cleaning products, aromatherapy, insomnia, relieving nausea, stress, anxiety, muscle inflammation, treating acute/chronic skin and hair conditions, etc. 

 

How and why should I dilute my oils?

when exposed to air, essential oils have a tendency diffuse and evaporate significantly more quickly in comparison to other oils. Carrier oils also help to dilute oils that may be too potent and can cause irritation with direct skin contact.

Therefore a carrier oil (neutral and preferably unscented, plant based oil acting as a base/placeholder) such as black seed, grape seed, olive, sunflower, jojoba, argon, sweet almond, coconut, apricot kernel oil(s). 

Dilution ratios may differ on personal needs and preferences: 

For adults, a one to five percent dilution is generally preferred. 

(30 drops essential oil per 6 teaspoons of carrier oil)

For children, a half to one percent dilution is generally preferred.

(3-5 drops essential oil per 6 teaspoons of carrier oil)
